In Chinese culture, the square shape symbolizes the Earth, embodying stability, trust, and the steady rhythm of duty. In contrast, the round shape represents Heaven, a symbol of unity, perfection, and the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth. For my mother, offering 3 incense sticks to her god was the highest expression of devotion. Although she raised us as Catholics in a predominantly Catholic Panama, her own daily ritual—lighting incense before the statue of Guan Yu, the Chinese warrior god of wealth—was a profound act of faith and protection. I vividly remember her solemn prayers and bows each morning, a ritual that moves me even more today as she approaches 96 years of age.
Guan Yu, revered for his symbols of loyalty, integrity, and protection, is honored by millions around the world. His statues are common in homes and businesses, a reflection of his enduring influence and the deep cultural roots that sustain my family’s traditions.
