In MaiYap's hands, the corals take on a whole new meaning as they become transformed on canvas in rich colors, dramatic textures, and abstract forms. She hopes these paintings will serve to highlight and make a difference in the way people view coral reefs, thereby joining her in collective effort to protect them. “Shades of Harmony” emphases the delicate balance of nature, playing such a vital role in all their survival. We, as a society, must do whatever is necessary to preserve our coral reefs for generations to come.

Our Florida Reef System is the largest coral reef ecosystem in the continental US, with its extensive shallow coral reefs that span 358 miles from the Dry Tortugas near Key West, north along the Atlantic coast to Martin County. They provide us with many benefits. Not only are they home to many species of wildlife, but they are integral to the economy of Florida’s tourism industry, including to commercial and recreational fisherman and divers. Additionally, they act as a natural buffer for Florida’s shoreline, helping to lessen the strength of waves, providing natural support for coastal resilience.
The Palette Knife Artists of Miami and Miami Shades of Clay are unified in drawing attention to the imperiled coral reef habitats deteriorating in our own back yard. The list of problems seems almost endless: overfishing, fishing using cyanide and dynamite, pollution from sewage and agriculture, invasive species, and sedimentation from poor land use practices. Among them, the most severe is the rising temperature change. This climate change breaks down the symbiotic microalgae relationship that gives many corals their bright colors and, in most species, produce the majority of their food. Subsequently, the corals appear white or bleached. Just one degree is enough to bleach many corals. This alone has led to massive die-offs throughout the oceans of the world.
In the hands of these nineteen artists, the corals take on a whole new meaning as they become transformed on canvas and clay in rich colors, dramatic textures, and abstract forms. As our exhibit travels, we hope these paintings and sculptures will serve to highlight and make a difference in the way people view coral reefs, thereby joining us in our efforts to protect them. Our “Vision of Harmony” emphases the delicate balance of nature, playing such a vital role in all their survival. We, as a society, must do whatever is necessary to preserve our coral reefs for generations to come.
